Job Description

Teacher Assistants are to assist teachers and other staff in implementing the educational programming.

The responsibilities of a Walter Lawson Children's Home Teacher Aide are as follows:

  • Assisting with the physical organization of classroom materials. Materials must be adapted with consideration given to the developmental level and special characteristics of the students.
  • Maintaining an understanding of the application and functions of adaptive equipment (braces, splints, wheelchairs, etc.).
  • Attending IEP reviews for students when requested by the teacher.
  • Attending required staff meetings.
  • Sharing responsibilities for direct care of students in the classroom (diaper changes, feeding, positioning, transport, etc.).
  • Assisting in the implementation and documentation of educational programming for students including formal and informal data.
  • Assuming responsibility for the safety of the children in his/her care.
  • Making immediate reports of emergencies, such as seizures, accidents and/or unusual behavioral difficulties to appropriate personnel.
  • Adhering to the philosophies of the education department and the student's right to confidentiality and privacy.
  • Directing all problems with the classroom to the teacher through interpersonal communication.
  • Informing the teacher of any special conditions which prevent him or her from complying with the responsibilities described in this job description.
  • Performing all other related duties as assigned by the teacher. Teacher Assistants must be in good physical condition.


Job Requirements

Teacher assistants must be approved as a state paraprofessional as outlined by the Illinois State Board of Education.

Teacher Assistants will report directly to the teacher in charge of his/her classroom.
